The credit industry in the Philippines is at an all time high. Issuing banks are competing for your attention, and to get noticed, they have come up with different “rewards” schemes that give you everything from free movie tickets to free flights. As a consumer, you can take advantage of this and get more rewards points. Here are some tips:

  1. Choose the rewards card that is most useful to you. If you don’t travel frequently, for example, you have no use for a card that gives you airline miles. Be realistic and examine what kind of points are more practical for your current lifestyle. If you often do groceries, for instance, you may get more out of credit cards that give you extra points when you shop in certain supermarkets like SM or Rustan’s. If you are a bookworm, you may benefit more from a credit card that doubles your points whenever you shop in Fully Booked. If you eat out a lot, get a credit card that gives you free desserts or coffee in your favourite restaurants.
  2. Pay with your card, even if you have cash. If you are disciplined enough to handle your money, then go ahead and charge as much as you can on your card to get more reward points, BUT be sure to pay off the balance in full at the end of the month.

Do you have a friend who wants to make a substantial purchase with cash? Offer to pay for his/her purchase with your card, and he/she can just give you the money. This way, you get rewards for his purchase. Just be sure that you pay off the balance with the cash he gives you, or you’ll incur large interest charges.

3.   Carefully read the rewards system information the issuing bank gives you. You might be surprised at how many points you can earn just by knowing which merchants / shops are affiliated with your credit card company. For instance, you can get more points by simply getting your gas from Petron instead of Shell. You may even get more points if you pay before the due date.
