All the Fees

A significant portion of the income generated by credit card issuing banks comes from all the fees charged to you, the cardholder. Banks are legally obliged to give you a detailed explanation of all these fees once you sign up. Here’s a summary of the most common credit card fees imposed on Filipino borrowers, based on Citibank:

  1. Annual membership fee. This varies depending on the bank and your credit limit. Generally, the higher the limit, the higher the membership fee tends to be. For instance, the current annual membership for a Classic Citibank Visa/MasterCard is P1,500, but for a Platinum Visa, you can expect to pay P5,000.
  2. Supplementary card fee. If you would like to give your parents, spouse, or kids a supplementary card so that they, too, can use your credit line, you need to pay anywhere from P750 to P2,500 to Citibank, depending on the kind of card you have.
  3. Monthly Late Charge. Again, this varies from bank to bank. If Citibank is a good benchmark, then you can expect to pay a minimum of P500 or 6% percentage of your minimum amount due (whichever is higher) every time you fail to pay on time.
  4. Monthly interest rate. The higher your credit limit, the lower the interest. For a Classic Citibank Visa, the prevailing charge is 3.5% a month, bit for Platinum, it’s only 2.5%.
  5. Overlimit fees. If you end up owing more than your limit (because of interest) by statement date, you incur about P500 in overlimit fees.
  6. Card replacement fee. In case you lose your card because of carelessness or theft, you pay a certain amount for replacement. Citibank charges P400.
  7. Payment processing fee. If you pay your card more than four times a month, Citibank starts to charge a payment processing fee of P40.

These are just some of the most common fees associated with having and maintaining a credit card. Your bank may also charge you pre-termination or cancellation handling fees, sales slip retrieval fees, and even rewards handling fees.

Be sure to read the fine print in the terms and conditions before you activate your card. If you have questions, call the customer service hotline right away. You may even be able to get them to waive some fees completely, especially if you have been a loyal client.
